Gordon Cook was an accomplished printmaker,
painter and educator whose work gained national interest
and importance.
The gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of Gordon
Cook sculptures, some multiples, many unique. Most have never
been
seen: They have been in storage or with family members since
his untimely death at age 57 in 1985. A selection of drawings – pencil,
charcoal and watercolors compliments these sculptures.
The small stick figure sculptures, later editioned in bronze,
were inspired by Cook’s walks with his daughter Kate in Golden Gate Park while looking for
sticks that “seemed special.” Later these wooden figures became the
subject of oil paintings. Cook said of them “I find great pathos in these
little figures. They make me feel sympathetic and cautious and careful and loving
of the human fact. They’re like country music songs, and I mean them
to have that same kind of twist.”
This exhibition will also include Cook’s painted plywood
cutouts of boats and toys that one critic saw as hovering between
sculpture and painting.
